Pando is a treasure for us all, and there is something everyone can do no matter how old you are. In 2014, a group of 4th graders in Sevier County, along with two Utah State University officials, convinced a legislative committee to ask the full Legislature to make the quaking aspen the Utah state tree. They were successful and the state tree was changed from the Colorado Blue Spruce to the Quaking Aspen.
In January of 2022, Friends of Pando will launch a similar campaign to appeal to Utah leaders to name Pando the official tree of Utah. We’ll be hosting educational workshops geared toward K-12 students inviting teachers, community leaders, students and their families to learn about the tree and add their names to the campaign. This effort will not only raise awareness about Pando, but also inspire the next generation of scientists and promote stewardship.
If you would like to be involved in this effort, please drop us a line and let us know you’d like to work on the Kids for Pando letter writing campaign.
Author Kate Allen Fox, has written the first children’s book to tell Pando’s story. Intended for kids aged 6 and up, this beautifully illustrated book engages readers’ senses to help convey the vastness of Pando, the challenges it faces, and how we all can be part of the solution. With lyrical poetry, Fox summarizes the science, action, and compassion needed to save this wonder of nature. The book has also been named one of the Best Books of 2021 by School Library Journal. You can order your copy through the publisher, Amazon, or your local bookstore.
Teachers can also download a free educational guide, created by Molly Ippolito, on the author’s website.
As part of our mission to educate the public about Pando, Friend’s of Pando commissioned Meet Pando, the world’s largest tree!, a coloring and activity book written and illustrated by Hope Smith. Copies are available at the Richfield Visitors Center in the Pando exhibit. If you are a teacher who would like to use the coloring book as part of a curriculum to teach kids about Pando, contact us to let us know and we’ll be happy to provide you with a pdf copy to use for your class.
