Each year, Friends of Pando develops research projects and gathers a variety of data and information about the Pando Tree to educate the public and policy-makers and illuminate this dynamic and ancient lifeform. As a citizen-science led organization, we work to uphold and promote Open Science principles by making our data and research products freely available to scientists and the public for their study, use, and enjoyment.

The Pando Living Map Project is a first-of-its-kind, comprehensive high-quality data visualization project documenting the Pando Tree. A living document, this project combines historical maps, contemporary maps and timely monitoring data we gather to study and protect the Pando Tree.
The vision of the Pando Living Map project is to provide a resource to help educate the public, support researchers and inform policy work to protect and care for the tree.

Dating back to the late 1980s, scientists, land managers, and community leaders have emphasized the need for continuous monitoring, protection and care of the Pando Tree as a unique wonder. In 2023, Friends of Pando established a longitudinal Wildlife Monitoring Program working in collaboration with Fishlake National Forest (FLNF), Pando’s federal land stewards responsible for habitat management, and Utah Division of Wildlife Resources (UDWR) who manage wildlife populations in Pando’s homeland. The wildlife monitoring program is a first-of-its-kind longitudinal wildlife monitoring and management program where Friends of Pando and our partners operate an array of wildlife cams and bioacoustic devices allowing us to observe and document wildlife year-round. Each month, we gather data which we analyze to understand wildlife behavior and inform management decisions in work to protection and care of the Pando Tree and all that call it home.
Between October of 2024 and September of 2025, we observed wildlife using 9 wildlife cams equipped with motion and infrared sensors, set to high sensitivity to help ensure fast-moving and small animals would be captured. We deployed 6 wildlife cams along the outer periphery of Pando’s wildlife controls, and 3 wildlife cams within existing wildlife controls to observe wildlife events. To be sure, an “event” documents activity and not the population of a given species in the area since the same animal could be seen multiple times at the same site, or, by crossing multiple observation points we established. In all, we observed 924 wildlife events for 2025, down from 1,416 events in 2024. While learning about this previously hidden world of animals who call Pando home, ungulate activity, namely Mule Deer and Elk, are a primary concern in management strategy for the Pando Tree. Mule Deer and Elk can play a destructive role in Pando’s health as the animals can eat large volumes of new growth before it can mature, and can also nibble, bite or scratch at the thin bark of Pando’s trunks making damaged trunks more susceptible to disease. Over the past year, we observed 645 Mule Deer events, a 35% reduction over 2024’s, 986 events with no Mule Deer observed inside wildlife controls. We documented 112 Elk events, a 63% reduction over 2024, where we saw 309 events. One male and one female elk observed inside the wildlife control were released in November of 2024 by UDWR. In addition to ungulate activity, 2025 is the first year we have observed the activity of badger, marmots and birds of prey. We have previously documented Mountain Lion, Black Bear, Fox, Coyote, Bobcat, Bats and scavenger birds such as vultures. The variety of wildlife observed reveals a once hidden world, and supports the claim that aspen forest in Utah are a hotspot of biodiversity.
Now with 3 seasons of wildlife data to examine, we can begin to make sense and make use of trends. First, consistent with accounts from UDWR, wildlife controls work to keep Mule Deer and Elk moving around and away from Pando’s landmass. Second, we can now describe seasonal patterns of ungulate activity. Mule Deer typically arrive by May and stay until late September, while Elk arrive in October and tend to stay in the area until February or until snow cover becomes too cumbersome to navigate. Third, Mule Deer observations outnumber Elk observations 4 to 1. Fourth, Mule Deer we observe tend to be females (Doe) and their young (Fawn) while observations of Bucks (Male Mule Deer) are rare, indicating the area is likely not a mating ground for Mule Deer but does seem to serve as a seasonal nursery. Fourth, in contrast to Mule Deer, we do find that Elk Bulls (Male Elk) arrive with their harem (a community of female Elk, aka “cows”), indicating the area is likely used as a mating ground, but not as a nursery. Finally, aspen management models familiar to those in state and federal forestry agencies, would likely describe the reduction in ungulate numbers as a qualified success where ungulates are the challenge most often discussed when it comes to work to understand, protect and care for the Pando Tree.
We have many reasons to be hopeful about the changes we witnessed between 2024 and 2025. Using wildlife data and patterns as a guide, we designed a plan to expand wildlife controls in 2025 and today, 80% of Pando is now in protective care. Compared to 2024, we observe fewer ungulates overall. We have documented ungulates move around the tree’s landmass and use pathways we designed to maximize confrontation with predators, both animals and human hunters alike. What’s more, in the event ungulates are observed inside wildlife controls, we can also act to limit their impact as we did in Fall of 2024. As has long been suggested, interagency collaboration, a commitment to continuous monitoring, data-driven decision making, and integrating field conditions as you work, delivers quantifiable improvements like those we can report for 2025.
Monitoring Wildlife Control Systems plays a critical role in work to care for and protect the Pando Tree. Dating back to some of the first projects to care for Pando in the early 1990’s, wildlife controls have played a crucial role in the Pando’s Tree’s protection and care. Absent wildlife controls, deer and elk can eat away at the regenerative growth faster than the Pando Tree can replace it. Wildlife controls also play another role; they provide a working space to undertake restorative actions within Pando’s landmass and give those areas time to recover. Today, Pando’s landmass is surrounded by 700 square miles of de facto wildlife preserve. The Pando Tree itself is situated less than a half mile from Fish Lake, the largest mountain freshwater lake in Utah, which serves as a veritable oasis for all creatures of all sizes seeking water and respite from the hotter, drier valleys below. Wildlife controls have been shown to be effective in wildlife management and in work to protect Pando since the 1990’s, work that was built upon between 2011 and 2013, and again in 2025. Today, 80% of Pando’s landmass is manged and protected thanks to these efforts.
Dating Back to 2022, Friends of Pando has monitored the nearly two-mile-long wildlife control system and worked to identify and restore breaches—the places where we find wildlife control failures. Collaborating with Fishlake National Forest, the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources, the Utah Dedicated Hunters program as well as independent contractors to undertaken 7 major fence restoration projects, typically in late winter before seasonal herds of deer and elk return to Fish lake. This year, we undertook 6 restoration projects. In terms of trends, 5 projects were undertaken in the upper portion of the tree, one of which, was due to construction of new wildlife controls. In 2025, Fishlake National Forest worked to removed dead trees along the roads, trails and fence lines, which are prone to collapse, a major contributing factor for needed wildlife control repairs year over year. Barring a major disturbance or natural disaster, we could reasonably expect fewer restoration projects for 2026.

We then document and fortify such areas large enough for young deer or elk to get inside the wildlife control system. While small deer and elk can do damage to Pando itself, we also do this work for humane reasons. Young animals who get inside, will endure an agonizing death being separated from their mother’s milk since Pando features no natural water sources. Since 2022, we have undertaken 140 fortification projects and, in 2025, undertook 12 projects primarily along the Lower Pando Wildlife Exclosure, where we saw significant erosion in 2023 and 2024. In terms of trends, after a spike in 2022, we now see roughly a dozen fortifications a year due to erosion.Thanks to advances in remote sensing we developed, in 2026, we will be able to apply field engineering strategies to address erosion “hot spots” proactively after which, we expect the number of fortification projects to dwindle.

The land the Pando Tree calls home, Fish Lake Basin, is a working landscape with a focus on recreation as defined by “National Forest Management Act of 1976”, enacted by Congress. The act followed a long standing tradition of human use of the land, which archeological evidence indicates has been used for fishing, hunting, commerce and agricultural purposes for some 10,000 years in no small part, owed to the fact that Pando’s home features the largest freshwater source in the region, Fish Lake. According to data collected by Fishlake National Forest circa 2020, about 300,000 people visit the Fish Lake Basin each year, but data on visitorship and usage of the Pando tree was unknown until work began on this program in 2022. Each year, in collaboration with Fishlake National Forest, Friends of Pando works to gather recreation data using passive infrared counters installed at gates to track hiking in the tree. We use the data we gather to inform recreation policy and proactively mitigate the negative effects of human recreation on the tree. For example, in 2024, we installed Responsible Recreation signage. In 2025, we collaborated with Fishlake National Forest to install signage to discourage wood gathering and carving in the trunks of the Pando under Federal Regulation 36 CFR 261.6 (a). Now in our fourth year of monitoring recreational use, data we gather helps define management policy while it can also be used in efforts to educate people about this ancient Utah wonder so it can be enjoyed by generations to come.
In 2025, our passive visitor monitors recorded 8,300 visitors, an 86% increase over 2024, which saw 4,456 visitors. As Friends of Pando does not have a marketing, nor recreation arm and our partners at the US Forest service saw staff shortages in recreation and public information, we were curious why we saw such a significant increase this year. Looking back at 2024 field notes, Friends of Pando crew noted a significant increase in brochure consumption between late September and October after physical monitors were removed for the season in 2024. In 2025, thanks to good weather, we were able to keep monitors in the field through November 2nd, 2025, where we saw the 2024 pattern emerge again. In short, travellers seeking fall foliage aka “leaf peepers” represent a huge push of late season recreation in the tree.
In terms of trends, we see recreational interest in Pando continue to grow, but considering how little of the tree was available to visit and can be monitored, we must temper our understanding of such growth. Previous to 2018, no signage existed telling folks where Pando was located. In this way, the tree is “new”. Previous to 2019 there were no clear entry ways, in this way the tree is “open” for use. From 2022 to until now, only four entry ways offered entry and exit points suitable for monitoring systems meaning, only some parts of the tree could be monitored. Lastly, false and misleading news stories that Pando is dying, dead or breaking apart, arguably drives a “disaster tourism” mentality, which our crews note is a common view of visitors they interact with. In 2025, 80% of Pando’s landmass was brought into protective care thanks to work led by Friends of Pando to protect and care for the tree. In 2026, Friends of Pando will work to add passive visitor monitors in the previously barricaded UG1 entry, as well as new visitor gates in the Lower Pando South and Cabins Regions of the tree which now feature definitive entry and exit points. From what we learned from 2024 and 2025, and the addition of logical monitoring points, we expect recreational use will again increase in 2026, revealing the full extent of recreational interests in the tree.
Overview. In 2023, Friends of Pando launched the first land-scale soil study of Pando — the quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides) clone at Fish Lake, Utah, within the Fishlake National Forest. Using MySoil test kits, we sampled 13 sites across the 7 regions of the clone’s landmass to establish a baseline of soil chemistry and macronutrients. The aim was to test whether soil quality is a hidden constraint on Pando’s regeneration, or whether it can be set aside in favor of the factors that can be managed.
Methods. At each site, location was marked by GPS and logged with the specimen number and region. A sterilized probe collected soil at 10–20 cm depth; samples were mixed with distilled water per lab instructions, sealed, and mailed for analysis. Sampling occurred in August, at peak growing season. Because the lab’s generic “High/Low/Optimal” ratings are not calibrated to aspen or high-elevation basalt soils, we interpret the measured values against aspen’s actual requirements rather than that scale.
Findings. On Pando’s basaltic ground, calcium is genuinely abundant and plant-available at every site — the soils’ acidity (averaging pH 5.3) confirms the readings are real, not lime artifacts, and matches the calcium-rich condition the USDA links to the best aspen soils. Soil pH is variable and runs acidic, but does not track where Pando grows: healthy regeneration was observed in or around every site, across the full pH range. The soil is chemically sound throughout — and so not the factor limiting regeneration.
Building on the success of Jeff Rice’s bioacoustic work in Pando in 2022, in 2023, Friends of Pando began exploring the use of bioacoustics to better understand wildlife who calls the tree home. In 2023, we gathered 218 hours of bioacoustic data to begin work to better understand bird, bat and animal activity in and around Pando. Analyzing that data using Wildlife Acoustic “Kaleidoscope” software, we identified 1279 sound events, 110 of which, were isolated for further analysis and study.
